If you are looking to save some money, there is a large garage in the nearby island of Tronchetto (with a 5 minute bus ride you will reach Piazzale Roma) which may be reached by turning right at the end of the bridge Ponte della Libertà (which connects the historical centre of Venice with Mestre and the other mainland areas). It is called TRONCHETTO PARKING (www.veniceparking.it - tel. +39.041.5207555) and costs 20 Euro for 24 hours. To find even lower prices, up to 50% lower, there are other garages in Mestre, (with approximately a 15 minute bus ride depending on traffic, you will reach Piazzale Roma). For example GARAGE EUROPA (www.garageeuropamestre.com - Corso del Popolo 55 – tel. +39.041.959202) costs 10 euro for 24 hours or the PARKING STAZIONE (www.sabait.it – Viale della Stazione 10- tel. +39.041.93802) which costs 6 euro for 24 hours during weekdays and 10 euro for 24 hours during weekends.
-2- The vaporetti are considered to be the buses of Venice. They navigate, often full of people, on the Canal Grande and on the Lagoon. There are many stops (pontili) in order to easily reach the main areas of the city and of the islands. A one way ticket, valid for one hour, costs 6.50 euro per person. The company that manages the system also promotes lower prices for day passes or for multiple days (www.actv.it- www.hellovenezia.com).
-3- Motorboats are of course Venice’s taxis (www.motoscafivenezia.it – tel. +39.041.2406711) recognized by the yellow sign similar to the one used by regular taxis. They are more expensive and it is advisable to ask the tariff before boarding.
-4- The porters or luggage handlers (www.trasbagagli.it – tel. +39.041.713719) use typical boats (topi) in order to transport large quantities of suitcases from Piazzale Roma or from the train station to the hotels, for small quantities of suitcases they use trolleys and push them or pull them across the alleys and over the bridges.
